  1. If this funky music wasn’t acceptable back then in Calvary Chapel, then my friend Andrae Crouch would have been thrown out at the first song! Seems the black gospel / funk / R&B was too ‘worldly’ or something.
Remind me of Andrae when he was starting out – his music scandalized the black church. And Kirk Franklin who nearly had his career ended when it had just started due to church backlash.
I wonder why we have ideas that certain music is ‘evil’ or ‘tainted’. How silly.

    1. Thanks for your take Alex .. Andrae eventually found a way to sing stuff based on the audience he was in front of.. he would be invited to our church in Riverside .. a Calvary transplant. I toured Europe with him.. he told me some war stories that would curl your hair. The word “anointed” came to mean a determination of the particular buzz you got when you listened. LOL

    1. LOL nope I wasn’t singin in this.. but sure Greg Eklar, followed the rules of Sly Stone sometimes.. Sly was more of an influence on my.. but also why I love Psalm 150 to start with! thanks for resonating Tom!

  2. Wow. Not only is the music sophisticated, it’s also well engineered. Totally Christian lyrics!

    1. Yes thank you… Sly was a favorite for me back in 1970 71 thru high school.. I’m sure they came first but then they were Christian although they were Jehovah’s Witness. For me both groups were about a different groove that I loved!

  3. They sound good to me & the words are all about Jesus. Maybe their songs were just too long for Pastor Chuck. They just didn’t sound like Maranatha music which is what he liked.
I guess they were ahead of their time. Too bad.

    1. the music was more abrasive and energetic it didn’t reflect that same kind of passive peace of God that came out of Love Song.. end of the day there’s a place for every purpose under heaven.

    1. there was a sweet sentimentality about love song and folk groups that was more in keeping with the Peace of Jesus.. Bands like 150 were hyperactive.. you’ll note too that in clips of SCB at Calvary Chapel concerts we were almost perfectly still ..

  4. Great stuff. If it looks racist, sounds racist and waddles like a demented racist duck, then it’s probably racist. Unfortunately little has changed decades later.

    1. Hi Joseph, thanks for signing in.. I found out this week that Psalm 150 would eventually play at least one satellite Calvary Chapel it’s on Youtube but I noticed at least three new players the weren’t original to the band

  5. It is interesting how bands are together and then they separate and go different ways and join other bands, like DC Talk. Yeah as everyone says, Sly and the Family Stone sound right there. I love Sly and the Family stone. I vaguely remember psalm 150. But it’s funny they were let go by Chuck smith. Interesting. Never heard that. This was fun to listen to. And it’s fun to hear all these updates and how you were influenced and got to where you were and are right now.

    1. Thanks for your encouragement .. I worry about going away from Nutshell Sermons and now I’m posting songs that I remember that didn’t get heard in the bigger picture! I have some great nutshells coming too!

  6. Wow. I totally hear their influence on you! I love that! (I’ll never hear Steely Dan or 150 without hearing their influence!) please don’t stop sharing!

  7. Some good stuff right here! My kind of music…..soul, groove, smooth riffs, and a great backbeat! I hear the Sly in it, and ultimately the influence it had in your music. Thanks for the share!

    1. Hi Deb YOu Made it! … I have other songs … I asked James what he sang on and he couldn’t remember! ? LOL .. I may post more stuff as my story continues..

  8. Wow. I grew up listening to Chuck Girard, Mustard Seed Faith, Imperials, SCB, DA, and many more. I remember seeing the name Psalm 150 floating around, but I never heard their tunes. Very impressive.
