Not that I was on the same track as you, but I can relate to saying yes to things, and for me, I’d ask myself “what did I get myself into?” I prefer to sit in the back row, so to speak.
I led Bible studies and youth group even though I never felt that capable. But the kids were always appreciative and enjoyed what I said. And then every so often I’d sing a solo, even though my voice isn’t that good. But people enjoyed the songs I sang. I loved singing with Noonie because she could cover my flaws.
We were just talking last night at Bible study about following the Spirit’s lead. Sometimes we ignore it and miss out on blessings. But when we follow the lead, others are blessed and we may not know it, or we may right away, because people come up and share their appreciation.
Keep doing what you’re doing, Bryan, because you are still blessing people.
people mostly remember how you made them feel! being there is the best talent God gives us in this life! Thanks for sharing Robbin
Bryan I’d give anything to have heard the sermon you preached that SundayWhat a precious story. I think I heard you tell it before, but my memory isn’t what it used to be. I’m so thankful your dad did not die after that heart attack! I just lost my dad a few weeks ago on September 21st, the day after my Birthday, I still keep thinking I can just pick up the phone and call him, I hate it, but I know I’ll see him again, just as you will see your mom and dad again.
Sure would love to hear that song you wrote…’Sweet Peace of Mind’… I’m sure it was beautiful
Hi Sharon, sorry to hear about your dad’s passing.. the die mine died I walked outside thinking I should call someone… funny it was my dad I thought of calling first.. how ironic! my mom’s memorial service was a day after her birthday she woulda been 86. btw I don’t even remember how the song goes now “Sweet Peace of Mind” never recorded
I bet Mr. Bailey’s daughter was impressed with your sermon!
LOL there was more than one daughter in the crowd! LOL ..
Very Brave and it helped you face your small fear about teaching a sermon.
You beat a band that dressed like the Dave Clark Five called the Amplified Version? Funny! Not many have that feather in their cap 🙂 I love the Nutshells!
LOL.. they weren’t in my vocal solo catagory btw.. just thought they were pretty cool
Bryan It is wonderful to hear that you’ve decided to do Jesus Music as your retirement. You are such an esteemed writer and composer and artist and can offer the world much more wealth with the Lord and others.
I am so happy you’ve made this decision! When we get to a certain age some of us wonder what we will do…I decided to write in 1995, and have navigated a course in the way to go, though it never always does lol.
they say God laughs at yer plans but then I do enjoy his surprises!
This is the first time I’ve heard a story about you before you were THE Bryan Duncan! Very enlightening! You went through a lot in a short amount of time! But you came out on top of those early adversities. Only Jesus can help us. Sometimes I think HE forgets me, but I know HE doesn’t, but it’s hard to remember. Sorry! I’m rambling. Keep up the good fight and the stories!
Hi Nikki thanks for rambling you know yer never dismissed here! I think God forgets me all the time.. prolly a standard untrust-able feeling
thanks for yer first comment on the nutpod,, I won’t forget ya!
Yeah I lead the service a few times here. Played the guitar talked through the whole thing. Then once they asked me to do sermon. I did it once and that was enough for me. Just not built to stand in front of people with the knowledge that if someone goes a stray cause of some bone headed idea I inadvertently put in their head, thats on me…
that’s also why my nutshells are only two minutes long and come with a warning tag! LOL
lets’ thank God for answered prayer in brushing Sinwar aside!
Yeah good riddins. Now if we can get Hizbollah out of lebanon. We can think about other things.
HOpe yer kid doesn’t have to be gone long.. sure takin care of bidness!
Awesome story! Never heard it before.
Good to hear… I posted this two years ago.. figger’d it’d be alright to repeat some stuff randomly!
Quite the story. The beginning of your Music career. Did you ever record that first song ? Is that church building still around ? Random questions. Still wake up to your music as my alarm by the way. ,
Hi Don.. never recorded Sweet Peace.. don’t even member how it goes.. it was kinda rough I had little idea what I was doing.. my dad’s church that he built was sold.. it’s now an Isamic Fellowship sadly.. just sickening
Bryan…I was listening to a string of your nutshell sermons and came across this one…I never knew you competed in Teen Talent!! That takes me back and it was a big deal back in the day! I didn’t start competing in Teen Talent until I “graduated” from the Missionettes program at the beginning of my Jr High days in the early 80s…mostly I stuck to the piano solo category…but a few years later, I put a girls trio together and the furthest we got was 2nd place at the Northwest Regionals (Alaska, Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana and Wyoming). We represented the rainy state of Oregon. Also was in the piano solo category. Unfortunately, I was so nervous that my mind went blank in the middle of my “Dino piano arrangement”, and I had to start a whole section over…hence the 2nd place in that category too, and the girl who took 1st went on to win 1st at Nationals. The cool thing about that experience was it was in Alaska, so we got to do some cool sight seeing in Anchorage and I got to try a moose-burger. It was also my first time on a plane and we had no adults traveling with us! I was the oldest at 15, the other two, 14 and 13. Fun times! The next year was another 2nd place at Regionals on the piano. On a side note, a different year I thought it would be cool to play for myself in the vocal solo category. Back in the mid 80s, it appeared that the only females that won typically performed Sandy Patti songs, raft with super high notes at the end….but I wanted to be different, so that year I sang “Satisfaction Guaranteed” by the Imperials, but no one seemed to care and I didn’t win anything at that Portland Metropolitan level. Maybe it would have been different if I would have done a Sweet Comfort tune? Ha! I don’t know…back then anything “contemporary” wasn’t what these judges (mostly pastors’ wives) were looking for. The year after that, I respectfully tackled the Sandy Patti song, “They could not”, full of high notes galore…. however, after my song was over, my high heel caught on a cord at the top of the stairs on the platform, and I went “flying” right into the lap of the pastor’s son on the front row…who was kind of my nemesis at the time. Major mortifacation. I’m guessing that didn’t help my chances as we were graded on way more things other than musical ability. Ahh…the stories. Thanks for listening to me ramble.
On another note, fast forward to the early 90s…I had never heard of Amplified Version until our new music pastor arrived in San Jose. Both he and his wife were previously in that group! I never heard a recording of them, but have seen photos and for sure they had some groovy clothes and hair back in their day!
Thanks for your nutshell sermons….and your stories! Much more interesting than mine!
Oh my … Hi Lisa, I haven’t heard the term “Missionettes” since my sister was one! LOL I was a Royal Ranger ..drummed out eventually. how cool.. I was in the Southeast regionals.. lost to a big guy! not sure you woulda heard the same group Amplified Version ? or maybe they went on to become nation wide! good to hear from you too looks like yer new to the comments thanks for takin time!
