Thank you. Tried my hand on a worship song once. The woman I was hoping would sing it read my lyrics and said she couldn’t sing that. It was a lament, meant for a strong voice. The title had been “Rock and a Hard Place.” Christ’s perspective from the Cross.
I was late to the party, so Hope of the Broken Hearted was the first song I ever heard you sing, Bryan, and boy did it have impact. I was an instant fan. Those soaring vocals and insanely high notes delivered with diction and clarity was right up my alley. I too am a tenor and greatly appreciate a man that can flat out soar! I agree during those early years, it was the sound that captured my heart and the lyrics followed later. This episode is one of my favorites because it paints a true and clear picture of what you were going through when writing of a song that symbolizes, to me, your coming out party. A Christian man wish impactful vocals and powerful, meaningful lyrics for a genre in its infancy. Thanks for sharing!!!

I remember it being a great surprise when heard Holy Rolling. It was a welcomed surprise. I didn’t know your background. I also appreciated your straightforward lyrics and music on the other songs. We use to listen to this album and compare notes. I intently listen to the lyrics. My friends would ask me what YOUR lyrics meant. Truth is everlasting. You based your lyrics on truth and that’s why it’s still good. Still touching hearts and giving hope…bringing those who truly listen closer to Jesus.
You mentioned “everlasting” and, perhaps, how ironic Bryan wrote and and “Everlasting Love” around that same timeframe!! The two songs were getting a lot of air play on Christian music stations during these formable early adult life years for me mid 1980’s.
1986—yes, I remember the year, although a little foggy now. This song is beautiful. The line, “But I know there’s a love that’s complete, where there’s nothing missing inside.” I think that’s the kind of love most people want but it’s rare to find. Love may not always be “splendored” like an old song suggests. I will end with this song line, “Love is such an easy word to say, but the hardest thing in life, to live.” (That’s from one of my fav-o-rite SCB songs, BTW!) I have great love for Jesus Christ—he made the ultimate sacrifice for us! And, I have love for my fellow Nutshellians—wishing all of you much peace, love and compassion in your lives. ❤️
