  1. Oh, yes! I am on our church’s worship team which means I get to sing wonderful praises to Jesus in the choir. But it also means I help lead some congregational songs. A lot of that KLove stuff (don’t turn me in, but that’s not my station). I often move my mouth but don’t know the song yet because I don’t really like that stuff. I figure I go along because music taste is subjective and God is glorified either way. But wouldn’t it be nice if it was fashionable again to write clever lyrics and music?

  2. I have to be honest, with a few (very few) exceptions… I hate the music in churches these days! Who listens to that stuff in their every day life? I’m sure a few soccer moms do, but I think most people do not. If they did, the modern worship songs would be on Kasey Kasem’s Top 40 show! And just to clarify, I am not referring to the old hymns… I love some of the old hymns. But whatever happened to the late 80’s and early 90’s in Christian music? That was an incredible era of creativity in Christian music. It’s gone now.

    1. thanks for sharing. I found myself complaining all the time as I currently play worship songs at my church that aren’t mine. it’s why I started this podcast in some ways… we need to find ways of pursuing what we still love. regardless of who salutes it

  3. I joined my choir years ago. Went to my first practice. Because I’d heard they would sing “The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power”. At practice, I found that the all-white choir was being led to sing it in the typical hymnal style of set static tempo, bar after bar, no flourishes or riffs. Now I grew up going to Andrae Crouch’s daddy’s church and I sang in choir with Andrae and his sister. I know what I’m talking about. But this choir apparently had never heard the song sung by the writer and originator. On Sunday morning, I sang in the choir the way we’d been instructed at practice, and quit choir that very day. Never sang in choir again. Not upset, just… I can’t… I just can’t.
That was many years ago. Now I only listen to black gospel – my roots and I can feel that music. One of the reasons I was drawn to you, Bryan, many years ago, was that I could hear black gospel in your music and in your voice. Now THAT’S worship music to me.

    1. First time I heard James Brown, I thought he sounded like my pentecostal preacher dad in his early years! LOL I sang at Andrae’s funeral btw. He n Sandra only liked my take on his Tribute project. everyone else sang it so white it was not recognizeable. In fact my record company at the time thought I’d used a clip of James Browns screams in my recording. Asked me if I got permission. I told em I sing like that and I don’t need permission. LOL
