  1. I was a slow reader so I remember that freshmen experience well. Somehow my daughter is a speed reader. she would probably roll her eyes if I put on some SCB as most of her listening experience these days is Taylor Swift.

    1. thanks for comparing me to Taylor Swift! LOL she’s got huge financial backing, has her own magazine about her! .. pretty narci- lol .. tell yer daughter I’ll just ‘shake it off!’ LOL and “Why you gotta be so mean”

  2. Love these stories. I remember some of those 70s songs lol.
Now your song Love You With My Life is a classic and should be in the hymnal lol.
You might not have been called to being a preacher or missionary but in music you are still giving the message! Love it

  3. Okay, so I did go down kind of the same path only a year later, though I didn’t go to college . I actually went to a junior college in San Luis Obispo for 2 years and then started my career as a secretary/admin assistant.

It was a coffee house called “The Bridge” where I went every Thursday night (cruise night), and listened to friends witnessing to me, Jesus music, and one other friend who shared the Bible with me, where I came to the Lord. Of course, I didn’t get into music like you did.

I did send for a Bible and got a JB Phillips version because the Outreach staff ran out of the Reach Out Bibles. I actually really liked it and I still have it.

I guess I can stop commenting every time something is familiar. I’m really enjoying listening to your story. Learning more about you everyday.

    1. never stop commenting Robin.. yer feeding my ego that I’m having some impact in all this.. a couple people remembered the Reach Out Bible.. good to hear I wasn’t the odd man out… well.. maybe I still was! LOL

  4. The Reach Out Bible! I had one of those. Sadly, I’ve lost track of my copy over the years. I liked the Reach Out logo so much, I used it on the deck of a surfboard I made. Thought it was a cool name in the context of surfing.

  5. I got a Living bible from my mom when I graduated from HS! I had just given my life to Christ on Easter so I underlined it every where :-D. I laughed at the bed spread gift. But did you make your bed in college??? Lol

    1. LOL .. I do believe that i did make my bed but it still seemed like an odd gift.. typical mom.. glad you laughed there, I always remember the oddest gifts from friends and fam. what was that one you got for my apartment way back.. I hung it on the wall next to my land phone.. ?

      1. Lol! BE JOLLY BY GOLLY! I put it on my hand made gifts that year! FYI my mom gave us a pair those tiny little knives for cutting cheese on a holiday appetizer plate with a new Christmas dish towel for Christmas! Lol. So random.Uh thanks mom! Fun silly memories.

        1. yea.. that was it.. just couldn’t remember what it said.. thanks for the memories! my little apartment wasn’t so bad once I got over the uneasiness.. didn’t even feel like a tiny house

    1. LOL …Hi Rod! /
spell my name on the check B R Y A N LOL good to see you on here RR hope yer liking my overall rants.. I save a lot of money on counseling! LOL

  6. Oh man, the Baptist church I went to after becoming a Christian was skeptical of drums anywhere!! No way would that have been allowed in that church back then

    1. well I would eventually be “accosted by the local self righteous vigilantes in the name of God with a scripture or two”
Always great to see someone on here that I know by first and last name Rebecca

  7. Oh my goodness, I absolutely loved 1910 Fruitgum Company songs! Yeah I’m corny like that. Love hearing your stories brother. I’m really enjoying learning more of your background and where you’re coming from.

  8. I had Breakin the Ice and loved that song, “I Love You with My Life”! It is so special to revisit this music and remember the spirit of what we were going through while listening to it and being inspired fir life ahead. It was fun to hear your stories of Bible college and how your music evolved during those years!

    1. Hi C … so glad these are not boring to you.. sometimes I feel kinda self involved not sure how I’m encouraging in these… but thanks for taking the time!~

  9. Cool story of your younger years. Can’t wait to hear the rest of the story…somehow I think it’s going to take a while!.
I was saved in a Baptist church in LB 1980, and drums were a nooooooo! Lord forbid you might tap your toes.

    1. LOL yer the second person to say that.. I musta found all the reasonable Baptists in Florida! at six minute intervals this is going to take a while.. but takes me a week to remember four months from 50 years ago! LOL

  10. Enjoyed this post Bryan, Remember loving the ‘Breakin the Ice’ album when it came out. My favorite kind of music was always pop/jazz/rock with a horn section. I guess that is why I always liked the music of Chicago. Of course, being like you, a good AG kid, we were not really allowed to listen to the rock music radio stations! I’m from Indiana, and WLS out of Chicago was the rock station that everyone listened to – except for my sisters and I. I think my upbringing was pretty similar to yours – a little on the legalist side but that was probably good for me. Gave me a little baggage for later in life but nothing to difficult to work through. BTW, learned about this podcast after reading Scott Bachmann’s review of SCB.

    1. Hi Gary ..so nice to hear from someone who had similar experiences with church. sure felt like I was the only one saying “what’s wrong with this picture” LOL btw did scott mention my podcast or did I add a comment on his post

  11. So glad to find this podcast, love it! I found out about it from your Pinto/Russ Taff post on Facebook. I saw you and Russ in San Jose, California in 1987. That was an awesome concert! My family toured and sang southern Gospel music. I remember when I was a kid we pulled into a KOA campground in Little Rock, Ar. In 197…..something. There was an old bus that said “Sweet Comfort Band”. This is when I was introduced to your music. Have been a huge fan ever since!

    1. nice to see you on here Chris.. the pandemic pretty much ruined the music thing, concerts have been really slow comin back.. I can’t assume for the future. That bus would bankrupt the band eventually. btw I also post “antagonistic devotions” that are only two minutes long… and also “Songs that didn’t make the last record” so it music you’ve not likely heard .. keep comin back.. I will be telling the story of the start of Sweet C in coming episodes..

  12. I spent some Saturday evenings in the radio station at the top of that church. Watched many a concert there too. Shame it was left to ruin. I learned a lot of things at southeastern that today I can say, maybe I wish I had not. I remember a Preacher’s son was laughing at the scent of our resident missionary who was teaching Old Testament Survey. The preacher’s son liked to get attention in the class so the missionary asked him what he was even doing there. His response was, “my dad said I was going to be a preacher or he wasn’t paying for college.” I do believe the missionary felt a little sorry for him after that encounter.

  13. Thompson Chain!
    Still my favorite Bible.
Got one my senior year of high school (I asked for it for Christmas) and bought another one about age 40 in a different translation.
Sure enjoy hearing the steps you took to get where you are.
